What common Americans desire from AI, not what artificial intelligence businesses want – Medium

When I wrote a lengthy essay outlining the case for reducing the speed of artificial intelligence a few weeks ago, it weren’t exactly common knowledge. It was barely spoken of in the tech sector.
According to Sam Altman, respectively, CEO of OpenAI, it would be imprudent for Americans to impede OpenAI’s advancement. He told the publication, “It is better that you choose to share in on the success of OpenAI if you live in a liberal-democratic country” as opposed to “tyrants governments.” Brad Smith of Microsoft has also maintained that we cannot afford to slack off lest China overtake us in the AI race.
However, it appears that the American people do not share their viewpoint. According to recent polling by the organization known as the AI Policy Institute, a staggering 72% of the US population favor slowing down the advancement of AI, while only 8% favor speeding it up.
Data analytics company YouGov polled 1,001 Americans of all ages, genders, and political persuasions; 42% of them identified as supporters of Donald Trump and 47% as fans of Joe Biden. A slightly less representative prejudice breakdown was found among the respondents, who reported being 73 percent White, twelve percent Black, and 7% Hispanic. The majority of those surveyed lacked a college degree.
The president and CEO of Anthropic, an antivirus and studies company focused on AI, Jack Clark, mentioned the poll in his widely read newsletter. He wrote, “It seems that there is a difference between the elite and the general opinion, which makes these results intriguing.” In particular, “this survey demonstrates that the general public views technology much more cautiously and is more inclined to adopt or opt for a cautious approach when getting an tech.”
It’s readily apparent that Americans want artificial intelligence (AI) — slow down! — and legislators should be aware that this is that which their people desire.
